Vangelis Athanassopoulos

Biography
Vangelis Athanassopoulos is a theorist, art critic and independent curator. He holds a doctorate in aesthetics from Université de Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and has taught art history, art philosophy, and photography and film theory in various universities. A founding member of the journal Proteus, Cahiers des théories de l’art (http://www.revue-proteus.com/), he co-directed issues #3 (Art and Public Space), #5 (Pornographies: From Animal to Machine) and #10 (Curating as a Form of Research). He is the author of La Publicité dans l’art contemporain I. Esthétique et postmodernisme, and La Publicité dans l’art contemporain II. Spécularité et économie politique du regard (L’Harmattan, 2009). He also directed Quand le discours se fait geste. Regards croisés sur la conférence-performance (Les presses du réel, 2018) and co-directed La Pensée comme expérience. Esthétique et déconstruction (Publications de la Sorbonne, 2016) with Marc Jimenez. As a curator, he designed and produced the lecture-performance Le syndrome de Simushir, 2019 (Fabrica Artspace, Athens, 2019) and was the head of programming/distribution for the video by Marie Voignier and Vassilis Salpistis, Des trous pour les yeux, 2009 (galerie Cortex Athletico, Bordeaux, 2011) and the experimental radio piece Carte blanche à Vangelis Athanassopoulos, 2017 (La Radio Parfaite, 2017).
